Hi there,

Some time back I promised to post some notes from an introductory LaTeX
course I gave. I intended some spit and polish before posting them, but
have only had time for a little correction here and there. I can make
no claims as to the accuracy and suitability, but can only hope that some
people out there find them useful. Readers of this group who are unsure
what all the TeX-fuss is about could benefit from them.

Feel free to use and criticise the notes as you please.

Cheers

Gavin

ps: I will post the notes in four parts, straight after this post

Hi again,

If anyone is confused, here's how to get those four posts into one document:
1) Save each of the four parts in separate files, or append in that order
if your newsreader allows
2) Remove all news header lines from the beginning of each part (the From:
etc lines)
3) You should now have one long LaTeX file (about 4000 lines). Each part
was about 1000 lines. Run this through latex. I used LaTeX with the
NFSS, but it shouldn't give any surprsises on the original LaTeX.

Cheers

Gavin

Now this is strange, I had the error when running an older version of
LaTeX (May 89) but not when running the newer version of LaTeX (March
92) (with NFSS, although it shouldn't make a difference).
Anyway, I just thought it was curious.

Yeah, I'll say that. I think we all appreciate your work. I've

Hi,

Thanks for pointing out typos etc. The ``next chapter'' is not nearly ready,
for I have a thesis to get under way again. But when I do write it I'll
let you know. It will be somewhat like the LaTeX manual Appendix C---the
command reference---but with more discussion.

Cheers

When I run notes.tex through LaTeX (no NFSS) I get the following:

! Use of \endmathegs doesn't match its definition.
\end #1->\csname end#1\endcsname \@checkend
                                  {#1}\if@endpe \global \let \@gte...
l.2750 \end{mathegs}

As far as I can see there is nothing wrong with this:

\newenvironment{mathegs}%
{\medskip\footnotesize\begin{center}%
\renewcommand{\arraystretch}{1.3}
\begin{tabular}{ll}%
\it \makebox[190pt][l]{Type} & \it To produce\\}
{\end{tabular}\end{center}\medskip}

and this:

\begin{mathegs}
\verb@$a+b$@ & $a+b$\\
\verb@$(a+b) \ otimes c$@ & $(a+b)\otimes c$\\
\verb@$(a \vee b) \wedge c$@ & $(a \vee b)\wedge c$\\
\verb@$X - (A \cap B) = (X-A) \cup (X-B)$@ & $X - (A \cap B) = (X-A) \cup (X-B)$
\end{mathegs}

Any help?

Well, I personally reported the problem with a fix to Leslie in
Spring '89. I'm fairly certain I've mentioned it to Frank and
Rainer since. It's nice to see that the fix is finally official,
but given the longstanding nature of the bug, I'll continue to
tell my students to put the % in.

Given the fact that the manual says that you should never leave space
between the arguments of a command, this is probably a good idea. :-)

Seriously, expereince has taught me that only a small part of TeX
users ever come to fully understand TeX's rules with respect to white
space. Hence, I try to teach everybody to put lots of % in their
input.

Hi again,

I'm pleased that my introductory LaTeX notes were well-received.
By mistake I managed to leave a few references to not yet existing chapters
in that document, and I just want to clear up what they will be like if ever
they are written.

The main aim of the notes was to convert our department to LaTeX and give
them some notes from the course. They were never intended to be complete
or exhaustive. Later chapters were to have covered useful topics not touched
on in earlier ones, like page layout parameters. They would have selected
the commonly required commands from the LaTeX manual Appendix C. Anything
more would be aiming higher than intended.

Now that the course is over and I have these notes, some suggest that
they could be seen as the beginning of a comprehesive manual on LaTeX.
I want to make it clear now that I have no such plans in mind. To
write such a comprehensive manual and place it in the public domain
would be irresponsible as regards sales of the real LaTeX manual (which,
I believe, help fund the LaTeX 3 project). I've no doubt that anything
I write won't be as good as the LaTeX manual, but it would probably undercut
sales anyway.

So to those many people who have said that they are eager to see the next
chapter(s) let me just warn you not to expect too much! Anyway, the
time required to write a comprehensive manual (say covering most things
likely to be asked about LaTeX in this news group) would be enormous!

Cheers

Gavin
