SCO SHIPS 100,000th FREE UNIX SYSTEM LICENSE

Now in its third year, SCO's Free UNIX program
is one of several giveaway programs at SCO Website

SCO FORUM98, Santa Cruz,, CA (August 17, 1998) - As SCO approaches 3
million total server shipments, the company (NASDAQ: SCOC) today announced
that it has also shipped its 100,000th free UNIX operating system, as part
of its "SCO Free Offers" program. The program, now in its third year,
provides students, educators, and UNIX system enthusiasts around the world
with free access to the most advanced and fastest growing server operating
system for the Intel platform, UnixWare 7, and the world's leading UNIX
server operating system in unit shipments according to IDC - OpenServer
(IDC does not count free operating systems in its shipment data). The free
systems are licensed for personal and non-commercial use only, and include,
among other features, Netscape FastTrack Server(tm), allowing users to run
their own personal Web server. The "SCO Free Offers" program accepts online
orders via the Web at www.sco.com/offers.

"Our SCO Free Offers program is one of several free-license programs that
we offer," said Ray Anderson, SCO's senior vice president of Marketing,
"and it has been a great success. We constantly receive e-mail from
students and educators who thank us enthusiastically for providing them
with an easy and affordable way to explore the advanced Internet and UNIX
System technologies built into SCO's UnixWare and OpenServer systems. I
first learned about UNIX Systems years ago at the University of Cambridge
in England because AT&T made early versions of the system available
free-of-charge to colleges and universities. Now, as owner of the UNIX
System licensing business, It has been a great pleasure to pass this favor
on to the next generation of students, educators, and software enthusiasts."

Free UNIX System Source Licenses Also Available
For software enthusiasts who like to explore the history of UNIX Systems
via source code, SCO also offers personal-use source-code licenses for
"ancient" versions of the UNIX System, including the Mini UNIX operating
system; the UNIX V6 operating system; the PWB UNIX operating system; and
the UNIX V7 operating system, which also covers Editions 1-5, and the 32V.
A $100 fee (which can be waived, upon application, for students or other
financial hardship cases) is charged to offset cost of legal and
administrative handling of the license. Interested parties should visit the
PDP Unix Preservation Society Web site at http://minnie.cs.adfa.oz.au/PUPS/
for information on source code availability.

Free UNIX Systems for Universities and Colleges
SCO's Academic Seeding Program offers software, curricula, certification
programs, and more to educational institutions planning to offer courses
that meet the increasing student demand for professional UNIX System
training. To become a program member, institutions need to complete an SCO
Academic Program application, and upon receipt of it online, SCO sends
licensing agreements and additional information about curricula,
certification programs, and support options. For more information, see the
website at www.sco.com/academic.

Free Downloads of SCO Client Integration Software and Other Products
SCO also offers anyone the opportunity to try its suite of SCO Vision97
products for integrating Windows and UNIX Systems. The products include SCO
XVision Eclipse, SCO TermVision, SCO VisionFS, SCO SQL-Retriever. The
software can be downloaded for free thirty-day evaluation at
www.sco.com/vision/eval. In addition, SCO offers free downloads of many
other products for 60-day evaluation. For more information, see
www.sco.com/products. From time to time, SCO also offers free pre-release
versions of new software for testing and evaluation. Most of the UnixWare 7
product family will install and run in 60-day evaluation mode with no
additional licensing. SCO also offers an extensive archive of free software
from the Internet technical communities, including source code, in the
Skunkware(tm) archives. This software now is also distributed on CD-ROM
with SCO product media kits.

SCO also offers free memberships in its Developer Program. Benefits include
product discounts of up to 70% on development system software; listings in
the SCO Directory, updated daily and available on the Web; the Core Dump
newsletter, containing code samples, programming tips and tricks, developer
success stories, and additional useful information focused specifically at
the developer community; "Channel Connections," which enables developers to
put product information in the hands of SCO resellers, vertical solution
providers, and advanced product centers; early availability programs, which
give developers early access to SCO technologies and products, including
operating systems and development kits. Optional services include
technical support, access to SCO Advanced Development Centers for
application migration, software testing, device driver development and more.

SCO DEMONSTRATES CROSS PLATFORM DEVICE DRIVER

First Public Demo Underscores Reality of Industry Standard
Hardware Driver Interface

SCO FORUM98, Santa Cruz, CA (August 17, 1998) - At SCO Forum98 today, SCO
and other industry members of Project UDI (Uniform Driver Interface)
demonstrated the same device driver running on multiple operating systems
from different vendors. The demonstration, the first major step toward an
industry standard hardware driver interface, underscored the reality of a
cross-OS, cross-platform portable device driver, one of the goals of
Project UDI, an open industry forum.

In the first public demonstration ever, the driver ran under SCO UnixWare
2, UnixWare 7, and Hewlett-Packard HP-UX simply by recompiling identical
driver source code. The driver has also been tested under Compaq's Digital
UNIX, and IBM AIX, and Solaris from SUN Microsystems, covering a wide range
of processor families, including Intel IA32 (x86), Alpha, PA-RISC, PowerPC,
and others. The tests ensure compatibility with both 64-bit and 32-bit
CPUs, big and little endian byte orders, and strong and weak memory
ordering. UDI currently supports SCSI Host Bus Adapters and Network
Interface Cards, with pointing devices, Fibre Channel, USB, and I2O on the
way.

The Need for a Portable Driver
A portable driver approach is critical to solving "the driver problem."
Operating system vendors can't afford to write drivers for all the hardware
that they need to support, and so in many cases look to the Independent
Hardware Vendors (IHVs) that supply the hardware to write these drivers for
them. But IHVs can't afford to write drivers for all operating systems for
each of their devices in time to meet market demands. The UDI model solves
this problem by allowing a single driver to support multiple operating
systems. IHVs can increase the number of operating systems to which they
give priority, and at the same time free up resources to concentrate on
innovation.

SCO and Project UDI Blaze Trail Toward Future
SCO sees UDI as next-generation I/O technology that enables a broad range
of products and hardware technologies. SCO continues to work with Project
UDI to advance this technology and move toward an industry standard device
driver solution.

"Project UDI is an innovative, cooperative solution to an industry-wide
problem," Ray Anderson, SCO's senior vice president Marketing. "As a leader
in the UNIX industry, SCO is in the business of advancing technology while
maintaining proven reliability and stability for our existing customers and
partners. To make sure that the needs of our ISV and IHV partners continue
to be met as we advance our technology, we promote and encourage open
standards, such as UDI."

IHVs Supports Project UDI
"UDI promises an intelligent solution to the driver dilemma, by providing
standards for writing device drivers," said Larry Robinson, Architecture
Manager at Adaptec. "UDI is a free and open forum bringing experts in
device driver architecture from multiple companies together. Adaptec is
helping to lead a number of good standards efforts that address I/O
software, protocols, hardware and systems in order to provide better
standards-based products to our customers."
Kevin Quick, Engineering Software Manager at Interphase said, "By
refocusing our development efforts on feature/functionality enhancements,
rather than porting a basic device driver to numerous operating systems, we
will be able to deliver our customers a more feature-rich and stable
product offering in a shorter period of time than was previous available
before UDI."

More information on Project UDI is available at http://www.sco.com/UDI .
