I've seen several references recently to 4.4-lite being available
on CD, but no announcement of FTP sites. Can someone explain this?

I saw hundreds of 4.4BSD-Lite CDROM's at the ORA booth at the Boston Usenix.
I paid for one along with a manual set (special show discount: $152 for all)
and asked for it to be shipped to me. It hasn't arrived yet and I'm feeling
a bit foolish for not taking the CDROM in person and having the _books_
shipped. Oh well.

Rest assured that as soon as I get my CDROM I will donate it to Gatekeeper,
which has 28 CDROM drives, about half of which are still empty. Remember that
gatekeeper exports its files via both FTP _and_NFS_ so the pressure will be off
of ORA somewhat once I get my CDROM. I'll announce it here.

(I don't work for DEC any more but I still know the folks who run Gatekeeper.)

:-) I *did* take a CD home with me from the show and it's now in
freefall.cdrom.com's drive, available to all who have accounts there.
Rather restrictive, you say? Well, it turns out that if you want
permission to *redistribute* the 4.4 Lite bits then you need to have a
signed agreement with the UCB distribution office (Pauline
somebodyorother handles it). It has been the delay in getting this
stuff signed that's been responsible for Walnut Creek not making it
available until now (we've had the bits for ages). I can say with
some assurance that it HAS been signed and WC is now simply awaiting
the return of the agreement before they open the floodgates on poor
ftp.cdrom.com to the 4.4 Lite bits. I probably should have given my
CD to Paul (it was sitting in a bag on his living room floor for 2
weeks :-) for gatekeeper, but neither of us apparently thought of it.

as a unsolicited observation that no one has mentioned. I expect some delay
in getting 4.4-lite to ftp sites is an attempt to get some much needed money
to UCB.

many individuals cannot afford the $1000 distribution fee, but I heard UCB
does take donations of whatever you would like to contribute. I am sure they
would appreciate whatever you can afford.

Does O'Rieley give a donation to UCB for each CDROM sold? (at only $50/CDROM
I would doubt it).

I can't wait to get a faster Internet connection (current is 14.4 SLIP

My apologies for a global posting, and to two newsgroups no less!

I'm desperately searching for the BSD 4.4 Lite FTP site that
was posted to comp.os.linux.development or comp.os.mach.

I've already tried archie, my news-server, my News directory,
and any place else it might be squirreled away. No luck.

Unfortunately, this copy seems to have been extracted from a CD-ROM
mounted with Rockridge Extensions disabled (or if the CD-ROM doesn't
use the extensions, there's no script in that archive to fix up
the filenames). That makes it next to useless for most purposes.

Better to get it elsewhere (it's starting to pop up in a few places
now; I got mine from a local site with access restricted to the
UK). The filenames are intact on my copy.

Oh, naturally, 20 minutes after I post the request I find BSD-lite for
FTP doing unrelated net activities. Sigh. Sorry.

If anyone cares, I found it on doc.ic.ac.uk:/packages/4.4bsd-lite.
