Release 6 of the X Window System, Version 11, will be made available world
wide starting May 2 at 12:00pm EDT (16:00 GMT). The distribution sites are
listed below. PLEASE use a site that is close to you in the network.
The X Consortium would like to thank all of the sites world wide which are
participating in the release of the software. We would particularly like
to express our gratitude to Petri Ojala at EUnet Europe, Akira Kato at the
WIDE Project in Japan, and Robert Elz at the University of Melbourne, Australia
for their efforts at prestaging X11R6 to the mirror sites in their respective
geographic regions.
OBTAINING THE X WINDOW SYSTEM
Thank you for your interest in the X WINDOW SYSTEM, Version 11, Release 6.
The software in this release is not in the public domain, but is freely
available. No license is required and there are no royalties; vendors are
actively encouraged to base products on this software and on the standards
defined by the X Consortium.
Sites that have network file transfer ability can retrieve the release from
the network location nearest them listed further below. If you are unable
to retrieve the release from the network, or you want to obtain printed
copies of the documentation, the X Consortium provides sets of tapes
and documentation as follows:
All products listed below will begin shipping on May 9, except for CDROM's
which are expected begin shipping on May 16.
Core Software CDROM
The "core" X Window System software, supported by the X Consortium.
Contains implementations of X Consortium standards plus fonts, utility
libraries and toolkits, and applications. Sources for all hardcopy
documents listed below are included on the CDROM. The CDROM is in
ISO9660 format with Rock Ridge Extensions. Approximately 140Mb.
Core Software Tape
The Core Software Tape includes the same data as the Core CDROM, in Unix
"tar" format. The Core tape comes on either 8mm or QIC-150 data cartridge.
Approximately 140Mb on disk.
Interface Standards Set (for Application Programmers)
Contains one hardcopy each of the following X Consortium standards
documents: Xlib - C Language X Interface; X Toolkit Intrinsics - C Language
Interface; Inter-Client Exchange (ICE) Library; X Session Management
Library; Inter-Client Communication Conventions Manual; X Logical Font
Description Conventions; X11 Nonrectangular Window Shape Extension;
X Synchronization Extension; Extending X for Double-Buffering,
Multi-Buffering, and Stereo; X11 Input Extension Library Specification;
XIElib Specification; PEXlib Specification and C Language Binding; Bitmap
Distribution Format; Compound Text Encoding. Approximately 1800 pages.
Protocol Standards Set (for System Developers)
Contains one hardcopy each of the following X Consortium standards
documents: X Window System Protocol; Input Method Protocol; Inter-Client
Exchange (ICE) Protocol; X Session Management Protocol; X Font Service
Protocol; XC-MISC Extension; X11 Input Extension Protocol Specification;

8mm (2.3Gb Format) tape, as the media format. Tapes come in "tar" format.
No other tape data formats are available from the X Consortium.
