BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF ANNOUNCEMENT, CHARGES, AND AVAILABILITY
IBM reaffirms its commitment to open systems by announcing AIX
(R) PS/2 (R) Version 1.3, its entry level member of the AIX family.
AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 and associated licensed
programs provide full hardware support and exploitation for all
models of PS/2 system units based on the 32-bit Intel (1) 386sx-16MHz
up through the Intel 486DX2-66MHz, utilizing Micro Channel (R) or AT
(R)-Bus architectures. AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 offers
support for selected OEM hardware configurations, certifying them on
a per-bid basis.
Support is offered for numerous new options, adapters,
hardfiles and displays listed in the Growth Enablement Section.
Support is also provided for the GEARBOX (R) Model 800 486
Industrial Computer.
AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 provides
interoperability with other versions of AIX, UNIX (2) and other IBM
and non-IBM operating systems through AIX PS/2 Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol Version 1.3 and AIX PS/2 Network File
System Version 1.3.
Enhanced installation, backup and update procedures aptly
named the EZ_UTILITIES are targeted specifically for IBM Business
Partners and large installations to simplify operating system
installation and maintenance.
AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 and AIX PS/2 Operating
System Extensions Version 1.3 are again offered on Internal Tape
Backup Unit (ITBU) mini-cartridge tape to ease installation.
The programs announced today replace Version 1.2.1 of the AIX
PS/2 Operating System and Version 1.2.1 of the Extensions and
selected Related Licensed Program Products. Upgrades from AIX PS/2
Operating System Version 1.2.1, Version 1.2, Version 1.1 and Related
Licensed Program Products Version 1.2.1, Version 1.2, Version 1.1 are
offered to encourage migration.
NOTE: Transparent Computing Facility (TCF) is not supported in AIX
PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3. Also, Usability Services
Version 1.1.1 is not supported in AIX PS/2 Operating System
Version 1.3.

BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
Performance tuning in AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 offers
increased throughput for input/output (I/O) in raw and block modes,
in addition to kernel performance enhancements and smaller size
requirements available through the availability of serviceable shared
libraries usage in applications written to utilize them.
Enhancements made to the pager and swapper areas of memory management
result in performance increases.
Improvements in the windowing and GUI areas are highlighted
with the introduction of the X Windowing System V11 R5 from MIT
available in AIX PS/2 X-Windows Version 1.3 and AIXwindows (R)
Environment for PS/2 Version 1.3 and OSF's Motif 1.1.3 available in
AIXwindows Environment for PS/2 Version 1.3 along with AIXwindows
Desktop. Support for the IBM Xstation 120 and Xstation 130 is
provided in the AIX PS/2 Xstation Manager (TM) Version 1.3. XGA-2
provides non-interlaced, high-resolution graphics on supported
displays.
AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 provides
interoperability with other versions of AIX, UNIX, and other IBM and
non-IBM operating systems, through the use of AIX PS/2 Transmission
Control Protocol/Internet Protocol Version 1.3 and AIX PS/2 Network
File System Version 1.3 over Ethernet or Token Ring. NFS allows
remote file system mounting and files can be copied and data shared
between systems engaged in these connections. The use of AIX PS/2
X-Windows Version 1.3 or AIXwindows Environment for PS/2 Version 1.3
allows clients to be opened and run on all participating machines.
The Korn Shell is offered and supported in AIX PS/2 Operating
System Version 1.3 in addition to the C and Bourne Shells already
offered.

SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 provides a set of six primary
tools called EZ_UTILITIES, used to assist in the system management
and distribution of AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3. An
enhanced installation procedure decreases the time spent installing
and reduces the possibility of installation error. The following
utilities are provided:
o Ezbackup
o Ezcustom
o Ezinstall
o Ezmkverify and ezverify
o Ezfilter
o Ezupdate.
Ezbackup, ezcustom, ezinstall, and ezmkverify/ezverify are
used when building distribution media (boot diskette, installation
diskette and backup media) perform routine system and/or user data
backups and produce new distribution media when a system
configuration change is made. Ezfilter and ezupdate are used to
update existing AIX configurations.
The EZ_UTILITIES package is designed to aid in the propagation
of a master system to a target machine. The use of these utilities
assumes that the master system is fully installed and configured,
then cloned or minimally tailored. The purpose of the EZ_UTILITIES
is to make this cloning process easier.
In addition, the EZ_UTILITIES package is designed as an aid in
updating target machines as new versions/PTFs of AIX are made
available. Special utilities are provided to allow individual
elements of PTFs to be selected and repackaged into customized media,
which is then used when updating target machines.
The EZ_UTILITIES support both the ITBU and 6157 family of tape
devices
INVESTMENT PROTECTION
AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 offers binary compatibility in
applications from AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.2.1 and AIX
PS/2 Operating System Version 1.2. POSIX IEEE 1003.1-1988
conformance may require applications from AIX PS/2 Operating System
Version 1.1 to be recompiled or modified.

ANSI X3J11/88-152, Programming Language C compliance is
provided through the use of AIX PS/2 Extended C Language
Version 1.2.1.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 offers an entry level UNIX
product targeted for the price-performance conscious Intel processor
based system market. The enhanced functions and quality improvements
make AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 very competitive in the
UNIX-on-Intel market.
STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
AIX PS/2 Extended C Language will be upleveled to Version 1.3.

PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: AIX PS/2 1.3 Related licensed programs
require the installation of AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3.
The AIX PS/2 Network File System Version 1.3 program also requires
AIX PS/2 TCP/IP Version 1.3. The AIX PS/2 DOS Merge Version 1.3
program requires DOS Versions 3.3 or 5.0.
COMPATIBILITY: Applications supported by AIX PS/2 Operating System
Version 1.2.1 are binary compatible with AIX PS/2 Operating System
Version 1.3. Users may wish to recompile their applications on AIX

LIMITATIONS: The AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 supports the
built in XGA adapter in the PS/2 Model P75 (8573-161, 8573-401) in
VGA mode.

installing or operating) and service for AIX PS/2 Operating System
Version 1.3 in the specified environments, is available through IBM
Defect Support. The service and support telephone number is
800-237-5511. Calls may be placed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
IBM responds on a call-back basis between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.,
(Central time) Monday through Friday (except holidays).
ServiceLink and SupportLink, within IBMLink (TM), may also be

information and defect databases, report defects, order defect

User management is responsible for evaluation, selection and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures and
appropriate controls in application systems and communication
facilities.

ORDERING INFORMATION
Orders for new licenses will be accepted now. Unless a later
date is specified, orders entered prior to October 2, 1992, will be
assigned a schedule date of October 9, 1992. Shipment of orders will
commence on October 2, 1992. Orders entered after October 2, 1992,
will be scheduled for shipment on the Friday following the week of
order entry or as soon thereafter as supply permits.
NOTE: AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.3 is only offered for 1-16
user license, all upgrades from previous versions will be upgraded to
1-16 user licenses.

The available order types are as follows:
o Program Package -- program diskette with documentation.
o Additional License Copies -- authorization for the customer who
has a program package to make a single copy of the program
diskette and documentation. There are two ways to receive
authorization to copy. Receipt of the invoice authorizes the
customer to make the Additional License Copy. The ICA must be in
effect. The customer also has the option of ordering a Proof of
Additional License certificate. In which case, the ICA is not
required. Additional License Copies can be obtained through an
authorized remarketer.
o Program Package Upgrade -- program diskette with documentation.
o Additional License Copy Upgrade- authorization for the customer
who has a program package upgrade to make a single copy of the
program diskette and documentation. Receipt of the invoice
authorizes the customer to make the Additional License Copy
upgrade. The ICA must be in effect. The customer also has the
option of ordering a Proof of Additional License Upgrade
certificate. In which case, the ICA is not required. Additional
License Copy Upgrade can be obtained through an authorized
remarketer.
PROGRAM UPGRADE
The program package upgrade option allows currently licensed
users of AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.2.1, AIX PS/2 Operating
System Version 1.2 and AIX PS/2 Operating System Version 1.1 and
Related Licensed Program Products to obtain the new function for a
program upgrade charge. The program upgrade to AIX PS/2 Operating
System Version 1.3 and related licensed programs are available from
October 2, 1992. Orders will be accepted now. These upgrades will
be available through IBM Authorized Personal Computer Dealers and
Industry Remarketers -- Personal Computers certified to market IBM
Authorized Advanced Products. The remarketer will require a Proof of
License for each upgrade ordered. The original Proof of License is
the colored front cover page (inside the hard binder) or the separate
Proof of License page in the program package as identified by IBM to
the remarketer.
Customers may also order upgrades through the IBM branch
office using the IBM Personal Computer/System Program IBM US Upgrade
and Certification Order Form included with this announcement.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
LICENSING: The programs in this announcement are licensed under the
terms and conditions of the IBM Program License Agreement. A copy of
the agreement is included in the program package.
ADDITIONAL LICENSE: IBM Customer Agreement (ICA) must be in effect,
or Proof of Additional License certificate must be acquired.
