Get Perl, and install the excellent Perl Scripts for handling URLs and
HTTP stuff. Here's the header of htget:

# hget --- get an html page from an http server
#
# Oscar Nierstrasz 26/8/93 oscar@cui.unige.ch
#
# This script and friends can be found at:
# http://cui_www.unige.ch/ftp/PUBLIC/oscar/scripts/README.html
# or ftp: cui.unige.ch:/PUBLIC/oscar/scripts/

This is probably exactly what you need.
