Netscape Enterprise Server to Support Oracle8 - The Database for Network Computing

Oracle8 and Netscape SuiteSpot can reduce cost of ownership for companies building crossware applications

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (June 24, 1997) - Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced its support of Oracle8, Oracle's next-generation database for network computing. Netscape enables customers building Crossware applications with its newly-delivered Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0 software to leverage data stored in the latest version of Oracle's flagship product. Crossware applications are a new class of applications that span operating systems, networks and businesses to link companies with their customers and partners in the Networked Enterprise. Oracle8 provides more users with access to more data and can reduce the cost of ownership for customers building cross-platform applications with the Netscape SuiteSpot family of integrated server software.

Oracle8, the Database for Network Computing, manages large amounts of information securely, reliably and economically over computer networks. Oracle8 is a versatile information platform that enables high-speed transactions, better business decisions, and sophisticated object-relational applications. Built on a foundation of proven technology, Oracle8 is designed to lower an organization's computing costs, manage all types of data, and deliver faster information access to all kinds of users.

"Netscape customers want to build Crossware applications that span networks and operating systems and that link businesses with their customers and business partners," said Mike Homer, senior vice president of marketing at Netscape. "The combination of Netscape SuiteSpot and Oracle8 provides users with easy access to their existing data and can reduce the cost of ownership for customers building cross-platform applications."

"Because Oracle provides native support for Java and HTML throughout the Network Computing Architecture, Oracle8 and Netscape SuiteSpot will enable our mutual customers to develop applications once and deploy them on any operating system via the Internet, Intranet or Extranet," said Gary Bloom, senior vice president of worldwide alliances and technologies division at Oracle. "This allows applications to be deployed more quickly across an enterprise without the need to install applications at each desktop."

Oracle8 raises the ceiling to support dramatically larger and more demanding OLTP and data warehousing applications. Also, Oracle8 is expected to pioneer a new breed of powerful Internet and multimedia applications for managing today's more complex data environments. Oracle8 includes enhancements in nearly all other areas of the Oracle data server, improving overall availability, performance, manageability, multimedia data type support and replication functionality.

For customers building applications that leverage the wealth of information stored in corporate databases, Netscape also offers Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0 Pro, which includes all the features and performance of Netscape Enterprise Server 3.0 - such as the Netscape LiveWire database connectivity - as well as a development-only copy of Oracle7 Workgroup Server database software. Netscape Enterprise Server Pro helps make it easy for corporations to integrate their company data and information systems into Intranet and Extranet applications that improve communication and collaboration between employees and customers, both inside and outside the organization.
