Types and Subtypes

The following list show the subtypes that NCSA Mosaic recognizes initially.

text

Textual information. Recognized subtypes are:

text/plain
plain unformatted text
text/html
HTML document
text/richtext
a document in Microsoft's RTF (rich text format).

audio

Sound data. Recognized subtypes are:

audio/basic
AU format audio
audio/x-aiff
AIFF format audio

image

Still image data. Recognized subtypes are:

image/jpeg
JPEG format
image/gif
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) image
image/tiff
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) image
image/x-pict
PICT image. (Macintosh-only format)
image/x-xbm
X bitmap image

video

Moving images. Recognized subtypes are:

video/mpeg
MPEG movie
video/quicktime
QuickTime movie

application

Some other kind of data, usually to be processed by another application. Recognized subtypes are:

application/octet-stream
uninterpreted binary data
application/mac-binhex
file encoded in the BinHexed format
application/macbinary
file encoded in MacBinary format
application/macwriteii
MacWrite II document
application/msword
Microsoft World document
application/postscript
PostScript file
application/zip
file compressed with PKZip (a compression format common in the IBM PC world)
